how to – handmade grapefruit facial scrub recipe
There are a a million things you can buy to clean, tighten, freshen, brighten and de-wrinkle your skin. Literally, a million. Some are cheap, some are expensive, some work, some do not. I’ve never put a lot of faith in commercial skin care products. I had a hard time buying into the idea that I had to load myself up with a lot of goop to look good. I prefer a simpler, more natural approach to this and, frankly, most things.
I’ve been making my own facial scrub for some time. It’s a complicated super serious process requiring a great deal of time, energy and money.
HaHa! That’s not true! I’m totally kidding. It’s actually crazy easy, super cheap and really really lovely!
For this version – the handmade grapefruit version – you will need these four things:
sugar (white works best with the grapefruit)
a half eaten grapefruit
a container with lid
food grade liquid vegetable glycerine
*Quantities vary according to how much you personally want to make as well as on how exfoliating you want your scrub to be. Remember that you are not adding any preservatives, which means that she scrub will not have the shelf life of a mass produced product. I generally make as much as I’ll need for a 2 or 3 week period and that’s been fine. I do not use the scrub every day as I don’t need to exfoliate that often.
I buy my vegetable glycerine at a local health food store. The bottle shown cost me $11.49 and will last forever – or a year, whichever comes first. Depends on how often I make the facial scrub or if I use it for other things. Point is, it’s worth it, buy some.
The scrub can be as gentle or as exfoliating as you like. For a grittier scrub, use more sugar. The vegetable glycerine is so gentle and good for your skin. It softens and moisturizes while the sugar exfoliates. I squeeze a bit of real live grapefruit juice in for its astringent and antiseptic qualities – plus, it smells nice. When I haven’t got a grapefruit around I use a few drops of skin safe fragrance – usually eucalyptus and mint, which is so refreshing!
So here’s what you do – and remember! It’s sooooooo hard!

pour some glycerine into the bowl of sugar, making it as exfoliating as you like: more sugar, more exfoliating
There you have it, homemade grapefruit facial scrub! How easy was that? Try it yourself and let me know how you like it. I find it brightens and softens my skin without any harsh effect whatsoever! And the bonus? 100% environmentally friendly!
*please note that some redness may occur with using this facial scrub from the sugar rubbing on your skin. This is not harmful and does not last. But maybe don’t try it for the first time right before you have to go to a wedding or something!

love it….need a local health store now!
Just grab some next time you come into the city. It’s really such a nice scrub and the vegetable glycerine is so gentle and good for your skin. Nicer than anything I’ve ever used. And how easy is this to make, right? Can’t go wrong.
